Delta Epsilon Phi: National German Honor Society – make them do German things in community
Visit elementary and middle schools and invite them to events
Be visible: hang posters, student work, etc in halls and display cases
Get the Word Out: Put an article in every school newsletter; send out press releases for everything students do
Get Out of the Classroom: Go on field trips; visit local colleges; and inform students about activities in the community
Get Real: Bring in German speakers/reps - check the German/American Chamber of Commerce; bring in former students to talk about taking German in college/ IV/V; have Pen Pals
Get Even More Real: Get them to Germany and/or bring in German students. Find out about he German American Partnership Program
Get to Know Them: Go to after school events to watch kids and talk to parents, Target parents: send letters home, be at orientations, send home articles, involve them in exchanges, field trips, and projects
Work Together: Get juniors/seniors to area college campuses or talk to campus German profs, high school teachers send letters to colleges to inform the German department about incoming freshman with German experience
Advocacy of German
Advertise the good things that you/your students do through the school newsletter and the local papers/TV stations/radio.
Invite non-German teachers/administers to be involved with trips/visits
Serve on committees at school and in the community.
Be visible in the community by doing community service with your German classes: make Christmas cards, go caroling, visit nursing homes, help at local German festivals, etc.
Work Together to do interdisciplinary units with other classes that show that Germany is not only beer and Hitler.
Create a web page that informs about class projects/events.
Encourage administratorsto take part in the 2-week summer Fulbright program.
Take part in the National German week program and stress the important contributions of Germans and German Americans.
Announce and take part in community German events (films, lectures, exhibits, etc).
Attend local and regional conferences to meet other German instructors and share ideas with people from all over the country and the world.
Share proof of success stories with administrators and colleagues.
